This is the month of ghosts, boo-s, aah-s, and gasps. But the dentist should be the last place where you get goosebumps! Dentistry has come a long way in the past twenty years. With advances in anesthetic, numbing gels, and sedation techniques, there is no reason to be scared of taking care of your pearly whites.
WILL I FEEL THE “NEEDLE”??
Don’t be afraid of the needle! I often tell patients that it feels like a small mosquito bite. We use plenty of numbing gel, which is applied with a Q-tip, so that most patients don’t even feel a pinch. It’s amazing how many people say “that’s it?” after we’re done numbing their teeth.
WILL IT HURT WHEN YOU FIX MY CAVITIES?
We will never work your teeth if you are feeling pain. As long as you inform us that you are feeling some sensitivity, we will stop and make sure to make you more numb! Once your tooth is numb, you feel nothing but perhaps slight vibrations. Our assistants are awesome at suctioning the water (they use 2 suctions, not just one) so you should never feel water build up in your mouth either.
BUT THE THOUGHT OF THE DENTIST MAKES MY HEART RACE!
Relax! We do offer anti-anxiety medication if this is needed. This will help you to relax and ease that anxiety while you get your needed dental work.
I HATE THE SOUND OF THAT DRILL!
No problem! Bring some headphones! We have upgraded our equipment and our new handpieces make much less noise than other old school “drills”. But nothing beats listening to your favorite Pandora station in your headphones and hearing absolutely nothing.
IS IT GOING TO HURT AFTER?
Never underestimate the value of Ibuprofen. This magic drug has helped many dental patients avoid pain after dental treatment. It possesses anti-inflammatory and anti-pain properties. We will gladly prescribe you appropriate pain medications to ensure that you’re able to get a good night’s sleep.
Apart from a spooky witch hat that one of the assistants may be wearing, there is nothing to be afraid of when visiting the dentist this October! We look forward to seeing you reach a healthy smile!
