As the term implies, cosmetic dentistry is any dental work that changes the appearance of your teeth, gums, or “bite.” If you’ve let your dental hygiene routines and check-ups lapse, it can also restore your oral health, which is vitally important to your overall health. But, additionally, restorative and/or cosmetic dentistry can also change your overall appearance, for a more youthful smile and facial structure.
Some of our older female patients are amazed that doing some cosmetic procedures on their front teeth can actually eliminate some face wrinkles and fill out their lip line, and they enjoy a younger looking smile.” Dr. Guillory
Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry
Increased self-esteem. You may know how it feels to be embarrassed because of your smile. Crooked, stained, cracked or missing teeth can make you avoid social situations, or cover your mouth when laughing or speaking, which is a horrible blow to your self-esteem.
Renewed Professional Confidence. Your appearance matters a lot. First impressions are lasting impressions, so you want to put your best smile on when seeking a job or meeting new people. It can also boost your confidence levels before you appear for an important job interview. It can also help you relax in social settings, knowing that you are presenting a radiant smile.
Better Oral Health. If you’re self-conscious about your smile, that can go hand in hand with poor oral health if you haven’t been to the dentist regularly. Not only does a fresh and beautiful smile look great, but the practices to maintain your smile can give you the motivation to maintain better oral health.
Restoring Your Smile is important for more than just aesthetic reasons and to improve your self-confidence, it also helps to:
- Restore your ability to chew properly
- Restore speech and pronunciation
- Maintain the shape of your face
- Readjust your bite to properly distribute force when you chew
- Prevent teeth from moving out of their correct position
- Keep you healthy
Some of the Cosmetic Dentistry Procedures That We Offer Can Include:
Dental crowns have a variety of uses and are commonly used in both restorative and cosmetic dentistry. They are made out of porcelain and the coloring can be tinted to match your other teeth so they look completely natural. A crown covers the entire tooth surface all the way down to the gum line. Examples of when a crown may be used include:
- Covering a tooth implant
- Protecting and covering a tooth with a large filling when not much of the tooth surface is remaining
- Protection of a weak tooth
- Holding a dental bridge in place
- Protection of a tooth after a root canal
- Restoration of a broken tooth
- Covering a discolored tooth for cosmetic reasons
A dental bridge is a device that holds a replacement tooth or “dental crown” in place over the gap where your natural tooth used to be. The bridge holds onto teeth that neighbor the gap, becoming a natural anchor while suspending the dental crown in place.
Dental implants are an option to replace missing teeth. An implant is a small titanium cylinder that is placed in the jawbone. Oral surgery is required to place the cylinder in the jaw. The implant will then fuse with the jawbone to provide structural support similar to how a natural tooth would. Once the implant has fused with the bone, a dental crown is placed over the implant so that it looks exactly like a natural tooth. A dental implant helps preserves the natural bone by preventing further bone loss in the jaw, and they last for many years.
Modern cosmetic dentistry has moved away from dental veneers and uses full porcelain crowns instead. Veneers leave more areas of the tooth exposed to new decay, last only about 7-years, and can break off. Additionally, full crowns look and feel like natural teeth and protect them from decay. Because they are much longer-lasting and cover the entire tooth, you don’t have to have them replaced near as often, and don’t have to worry about them breaking off, leaving you in an emergent situation.
Porcelain crowns are individually crafted and are effectively a natural-appearing “cover-up” for any tooth, much like fresh paint on a wall in your home. This makes cosmetic dental crowns an attractive option for those dental patients who are not comfortable with more invasive procedures that require a full tooth replacement.
In some cases, porcelain crowns have been used as an alternative to orthodontist braces, as they can be aligned to make your teeth appear to have fewer gaps.
Dentures are prosthetic devices used to replace missing teeth. They are removable for cleaning and usually only worn during hours that you are awake. We offer both full and partial denture options. Full dentures are designed to replace your top and bottom teeth. A partial denture may be used if you are just missing a few teeth. Our dentures are comprised of a combination of porcelain powder and acrylic as a binder. The base is flesh-colored and sits over your gums.
We offer our patients a custom, take-home kit option if they are looking to whiten their teeth. We take impressions of your teeth and provide you with custom trays that are shaped exactly like your teeth. This method is not only convenient but allows you to choose the amount of whitening that you would like to achieve based on the results you desire.
The take-home kit changes the shade and color of your teeth through the application of peroxide gel directly to the teeth. Our kit is easy-to-use and very safe, and our custom-fitted trays are comfortable to use. The total tooth whitening process time may vary, based on how white you want your smile to get.
