Things That Can Cause Yellowing or Discoloration of Teeth
Poor dental hygiene
- Lack of regular professional cleanings and check-ups
- Aging
- Smoking or vaping
- Drinking beverages high in tannins such as wine, coffee, tea, grape juice, apple juice, and beer
- Consuming acidic foods such as lemons, limes, and tomatoes
The outermost layer of your teeth is called enamel, which is porous. Enamel covers the layer of dentin, which is naturally yellow. It’s possible for the enamel to erode over time making it more translucent which allows the color of the dentin to show through.
Additionally, because the enamel is porous, things like consuming beverages high in tannins or smoking cigarettes can stain the teeth. One of the biggest contributors to yellowing teeth is poor dental hygiene.
If you do not go to the dentist for regular check-ups and professional cleanings, plaque can build up and harden into a substance called tartar, also called dental calculus, which can also lead to serious gum disease. Tartar is yellow and can’t be removed without a professional deep cleaning. We are a full-service dentist, offering both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures.
Philips Zoom! Nite White
Our preferred teeth whitening system of choice for our patients is Philips Zoom! Nite White. It does NOT contain bleach, but rather an ingredient called carbamide peroxide. The NIH (National Institute of Health) indicates that when manufacturer’s instructions are followed, carbamide peroxide tooth whitening is both safe and effective.
If you haven’t been to the dentist in a while, we recommend that you first come in for an exam and a cleaning of your teeth. If you have regular dental check-ups, a simple cleaning is all that’s required. If you do have tartar build-up on your teeth, you may need a professional deep cleaning to remove the tartar and address any gum disease.
The Teeth Whitening Process
To get you started on your teeth whitening process, we will take a mold of both your upper and lower teeth that will fit YOUR teeth perfectly. Once the plastic trays are made, we will provide you with your Philips Zoom! Whitening kit.
The kit contains three syringes of whitening gel that you put into your trays. A little bit of the whitening agent goes a LONG way so you will have plenty of product to completely change the whiteness of your teeth. Generally, you will start to see results in just a few days! Some folks wear their trays for just a few hours per day, but for maximum benefits, we recommend that you wear them overnight.
Because the trays are fitted exactly for your teeth, they are comfortable and easy to sleep in. You can continue to use the teeth whitening system until your teeth reach the desired whiteness, usually within about 7 – 14 days depending on how yellow your teeth are!
The Philips Zoom system is both safe and effective. Our patients have been very pleased with the results they’ve achieved in such a short period of time!
